Because of the lack of terrestrial communication infrastructure in Turkey, Turksat has made it a mission to provide Internet services to rural area schools with its satellite systems. An agreement was reached and signed by the Ministry of Education under the “Universal Service Fund” to provide the much needed Internet infrastructure, especially for areas falling in the East and Southeast of Turkey. The first batch of schools to benefit from the agreement will be the 6661 rural schools in the region, and if needed, that number can be capped up to 11200 schools. These schools are mainly located in 81 counties that lie in the South Eastern parts of Turkey. As of now, Turksat has completed working on the rural School Internet Project. In mid ’07 the project will be put out to tender, and schools that are in dire need of Internet Access will start using the Turksat service. Turksat, the International Satellite and Cable TV Operator, has made it a mission to transform information technology into services easily applicable to the everyday lives of people. In its pursuit of providing satellite and communication services, Turksat has been at the forefront of R&D in information technologies furthering its goal to be the leader in satellite and space industry. |
