The "Bursa Urban Traffic Management Centre Project", which aims to produce solutions to Bursa's traffic problem, was implemented in cooperation with Türksat Bilişim and Bursa Metropolitan Municipality. The application, which is the first of its kind in Turkey, will save 36 million TL in fuel and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 3 thousand tons.

The introductory meeting of the "Bursa Urban Traffic Management Center Project" was held with the participation of Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Alinur Aktaş, Türksat Deputy General Manager Ahmet Savaş, Türksat IT Business Development and Project Management Director Ömer Faruk Çöllüoğlu and project managers. Following the meeting, the Traffic Management Center, where Bursa traffic is managed from a single centre, was examined.

Within the scope of the project, adaptive systems that measure the number of vehicles and queue lengths in each direction connected to the intersection and manage traffic lights at the intersections depending on the vehicle density were installed at 35 of the busiest intersections in Bursa. 256 intersections were connected to the Traffic Management Centre, which can control them remotely. As a result of traffic engineering studies carried out at 90 intersections on the 20 busiest routes of Bursa, vehicle counts were made with the help of cameras. These intersections and the corridors formed by these intersections were analysed regionally with micro and macro simulation software within the framework of traffic engineering with the number of vehicles detected. With the new system, the number of vehicles in each direction can be determined thanks to smart cameras.

Management from a single centre

The error conditions at 256 intersections connected to the centre and the instantaneous status of the intersections can be monitored and all intersections can be intervened from the Traffic Management Centre if necessary. In addition, 11 mobile cameras were installed at critical points within the framework of the project to monitor the intersection area and 23 vehicle counting cameras were installed to collect statistical data. Vehicle counting cameras will continuously count vehicles at critical points in the city and traffic regulations will be made according to these statistics. It was determined that an average of 1 million 750 thousand vehicles pass through the intersections where the systems were installed daily.

36 million liras of fuel savings

Thanks to the fact that situations such as vehicle breakdowns or traffic accidents that cause an instantaneous decrease in traffic flow speed can now be seen instantly from the centre, situations that adversely affect traffic such as accidents, vehicle breakdowns and the points where these events occur can be detected instantly. In this way, with the interventions of the operators and the algorithms used, the effects of the negativities experienced at these points and the reaction times to these negativities will be minimized. As a result of this project realized in cooperation with Türksat Bilişim, approximately 36 million TL of fuel savings will be achieved annually by improving travel and waiting times, while carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by approximately 3 thousand tons on an annual basis.
